This quote reminds me of critic Leslie Fiedler's speech at Queens College when my brother won that year's writing award. That must have been sometime in the late 60s. Fiedler compared writing to defecation in vivid detail. As I remember, the point was that writers have strong urges but are constipated by their fear of self-revelation. For some reason, it's one of the few speeches I've heard in my life that remains with me to this day.
